PINEY WOODS, MS –The Piney Woods School mock trial teams finished in first place in the Magnolia Bar Association statewide competition at the Hinds County Courthouse in Jackson, Mississippi on December 1st and 2nd.
The Magnolia Bar Association, a state trial lawyers' organization, has hosted the mock trial competition since 1989, in an effort to promote the exchange of ideas among students and provide a greater understanding of and appreciation for the law, court procedures, and the Mississippi Judicial systems.
In addition to finishing in first place as a group, individual winners from The Piney Woods School were Hallie Millsaps of Forest, Mississippi, and Calab Obodo, of Atlanta, Georgia. The senior debaters were awarded scholarships of $700 and $500, respectively.
“Mrs. Jones and our fantastic students have brought honor and distinction to The Piney Woods School community. We are truly proud of her leadership and the students’ tremendous accomplishments,” said Monica Crossley, Dean of Faculty.
The Piney Woods School Mock Trial Program gives students a better understanding of the legal system, increasing their awareness of the importance of law in a democratic society while strengthening their understanding of fundamental rights under the U.S. Constitution. The program also promotes increased confidence, poise, oral skills, critical thinking and teamwork.
