A Historic Space Renewed: Inside the Zilpha Chandler Auditorium Restoration

For more than 70 years, the Zilpha Chandler Arts Auditorium has been a gathering place for creativity, storytelling, and community at The Piney Woods School. Built in 1954 with student-made brick, the space has hosted generations of performances—from sacred spirituals to nationally recognized artists.

Thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission, this historic space has undergone critical renovations to address aging infrastructure, storm-related damage, and accessibility needs—ensuring it continues to serve students and the broader community for decades to come.

What the Renovation Made Possible

With support from MACS, Piney Woods completed:

  • Installation of new lighting and ceilings throughout corridors, hallways, and restrooms

  • Roof and HVAC replacement, improving safety and climate control

  • ADA-compliant modifications, making the auditorium accessible to all

Each improvement reflects our commitment to stewardship, inclusion, and excellence.

A Moment of Renewal

The renovated auditorium was officially celebrated during Piney Woods’ annual Christmas Drama, a cherished campus tradition. This brief performance marked not just the return of the space—but a renewed investment in arts education and community engagement.

We are deeply grateful to the Mississippi Arts Commission for investing in Piney Woods’ legacy and future. This partnership allows us to preserve history while expanding access to the arts for students and our PWS community.
