When Makayla Warner arrived at The Piney Woods School from The Bronx, New York, she brought with her a desire to learn, grow, and embrace new opportunities. Over the years, she found more than an education—she found her voice.
As a member of the Class of 2026, Makayla made her mark on the Piney Woods community through academic commitment, artistic expression, and servant leadership. As a proud member of the Cotton Blossom Singers, she represented the school through one of its most cherished traditions, developing confidence, discipline, and a deeper appreciation for the power of music to inspire and connect communities.

That growth was on full display during Commencement, where Makayla was selected to serve as one of the student speakers for the Class of 2026. Standing before her classmates, families, faculty, alumni, and friends, she reflected on a journey shaped by perseverance, faith, and purpose—encouraging her fellow graduates as they prepared to begin the next chapter of their lives.
"From the Bronx, New York," Makayla proudly shared while unveiling her senior banner, a moment that symbolized just how far she had come. That banner represented more than graduation; it celebrated years of hard work, meaningful relationships, and a community that challenged her to grow into the leader she is today.
This fall, Makayla will continue her educational journey at the University of Connecticut, where she plans to major in Biological Sciences. Inspired by a passion for science and discovery, she looks forward to building a career that allows her to make a meaningful impact through research, innovation, and service.
Makayla's journey reflects what makes The Piney Woods School unique. Here, learners are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, discover their strengths, and develop the confidence to lead with purpose. Whether performing with the Cotton Blossom Singers, addressing her graduating class, or preparing for college, Makayla embraced every opportunity to grow.
As she joins the proud network of Piney Woods alumni, Makayla carries with her the values of faith, integrity, excellence, and service that have defined generations of graduates before her.
Congratulations, Makayla Warner. Your Piney Woods family celebrates your accomplishments and looks forward to the impact you will make at the University of Connecticut and beyond.

What an inspiring journey—it's encouraging to see how education and determination can open so many doors. I still keep handwritten journals from important milestones, and reading old handwritten documents is a wonderful way to revisit those memories over time.
What an inspiring story, Makayla! I'm curious—how did your love for storytelling impact your academic journey at UConn? It’s fascinating to think about how creativity, like in Platform Games, can shape voices and futures!
