New Show Goats Expand Hands-On Agricultural Learning at Piney Woods

The Piney Woods School recently welcomed two exceptional show goats to its livestock program, generously donated by State Representative Lance Varner, owner of Varner Farms in Florence, Mississippi, and his wife.
These are not typical project animals. One goat was produced through embryo transfer and the other through artificial insemination, giving Piney Woods learners access to some of the high-quality genetics found within the competitive show goat industry.
Their arrival creates a unique opportunity for learners to participate in livestock projects at a level that might otherwise be difficult to access. Through hands-on involvement, learners will gain practical experience in animal care, nutrition, grooming, health monitoring, livestock management, and preparation for competitive showing.
These experiences reflect the Piney Woods philosophy that our campus is our classroom and our lands are our labs. Working directly with livestock allows learners to strengthen their agricultural knowledge while developing responsibility, patience, confidence, and an appreciation for the consistency required to care for animals.
The new goats also support the continued growth of agricultural education at Piney Woods. Across the school’s expansive farm, learners have opportunities to explore animal science, food production, land stewardship, and career pathways connected to agriculture.
We are grateful to Representative Varner and his wife for this meaningful contribution and for recognizing the value of providing learners with high-quality, experiential learning opportunities.
As the goats settle into their new home, they will become an important part of farm life and another example of how community support helps expand what is possible for Piney Woods learners.
