Prepping the Land, Growing the Mission at The Piney Woods School Farm

The Piney Woods School Farm is preparing for a season of growth, harvest, and continued hands-on learning.

This past week, our farm team used the water wheel transplanter to plant 1,200 watermelon plants, continuing to expand the school’s growing operation and create meaningful learning opportunities connected to agriculture, stewardship, and the land.

The attached photos and video show the preparation taking place across campus — rows of freshly worked soil, newly planted watermelon plants, and the early signs of new life beginning to take root. These images capture more than farm work; they reflect the rhythm of preparation, patience, and purpose that continues to shape the Piney Woods experience.

This season, the farm is growing a wide variety of crops, including corn, beans, peas, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, blackberries, yellow and red meat watermelons, cantaloupe, and flowers. Many of these crops are expected to be ready for harvest in the coming weeks.

At Piney Woods, the land continues to serve as a living classroom. Through the farm, learners are exposed to lessons in responsibility, sustainability, agriculture, food systems, and the value of meaningful work. Each row planted represents not only what will be harvested, but also what is being cultivated in the lives of our learners.
