This November, The Piney Woods School proudly celebrates Founders’ Weekend 2025, honoring individuals and families whose enduring commitment, leadership, and generosity have shaped the legacy of our institution. Guided by this year’s theme, “A Legacy of Braving Uncharted Territory,” we recognize those whose courage, vision, and dedication continue to inspire generations of learners.
Schooler Family Foundation: A Century of Commitment
The Schooler family of Coshocton, Ohio, has been an integral part of Piney Woods’ story for over 100 years. From Seward Deane Schooler’s early service on the Board alongside founder Dr. Laurence C. Jones to the establishment of the Schooler Family Foundation in 1986, the family’s unwavering dedication has provided critical support for generations of students.
Today, the legacy continues through Dean, David R., Heather L., Steven J., Matthew W., Wesley H., Deana, and Chelsea H. Schooler, whose guidance and philanthropy uphold the family’s values of community, education, and service. We are also proud to welcome Steven J. Barr, Foundation board member and husband of Heather Schooler, as a new member of The Piney Woods School Board, bringing decades of leadership experience in finance and sustainable investment to our community.
Oleta Garrett Fitzgerald: Champion for Children and Justice
Piney Woods alumna Oleta Garrett Fitzgerald has devoted her career to advancing justice, equality, and educational access. As Director of the Children’s Defense Fund Southern Regional Office, she leads initiatives across the South to ensure early childhood education, healthcare access, and opportunities for Black girls and young women. Her work through the Southern Rural Black Women’s Initiative for Economic & Social Justice impacts more than 2,500 women across 77 counties, and her contributions span local, state, and national platforms, including service in the Clinton Administration.
Lee A. Unger: Fiscal Leadership and Mentorship
Lee A. Unger dedicated nearly three decades to The Piney Woods School, rising from Staff Accountant to Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and serving as Interim Administrator. Beyond his professional impact, Lee became a mentor and father figure to countless students, guiding them toward meaningful, successful lives. Today, his commitment to community continues through leadership roles in nonprofit organizations and initiatives like the LEAD Foundation Inc., fostering educational opportunities for youth.
Join Us for Founders’ Weekend
We are also thrilled to welcome Dr. Julius Garvey, who will speak during the main program on Saturday. Founders’ Weekend 2025 promises inspiring moments, celebrations, and opportunities to honor those who have shaped the Piney Woods legacy.
Celebrate a century of vision, leadership, and courage with us. RSVP here to join the festivities, and mark your calendar for an unforgettable weekend of legacy, learning, and community.
