When Vince Keeler arrived at Piney Woods in the fall of 1996 as a 10th grader, he was continuing a family tradition. With two older brothers who had attended before him, enrolling at Piney Woods felt both natural and meaningful.
“Piney Woods attendance was sort of a tradition in my family. Having two older brothers attend years prior, it was only fitting for me to continue the tradition.”
That tradition helped shape a life rooted in purpose.
Today, Vince serves as Forest Supervisor for the Mark Twain National Forest, where he is responsible for managing approximately 1.5 million acres of national forest land for the multiple use and benefit of the American public.
With more than 21 years of service in the United States Forest Service, Vince has worked in both technical and leadership roles. His expertise in resilient ecosystems, natural resource management, community collaboration, and partnership building has shaped a distinguished career across the federal government and private sector.
In 2016, Vince took a leave of absence to serve as Director of the Sustainable Forestry Program at the Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation in Charleston, South Carolina. He considers this chapter part of his life’s calling. There, he worked with more than 100 landowners, educating families on the value of landownership and sustainable forestry practices — helping preserve generational wealth and strengthen communities.
Throughout his journey, Vince has drawn on the formation he received at Piney Woods — an education that develops the whole person.
“Piney Woods gave me a strong foundation that allows me to embody the Forest Service motto of ‘Caring for the Land and Serving the People.’”
His life and leadership reflect the Piney Woods commitment to cultivating students who think critically (Head), serve compassionately (Heart), and lead actively through meaningful work (Hands).
From family tradition to national stewardship, Vince Keeler’s story is a powerful testament to the enduring impact of a Piney Woods education.
