Takira Adams exemplifies this philosophy through her remarkable journey with the High School High Scholars (HS²) program in Carbondale, Colorado.
Introduced to HS² in 9th grade, Takira initially imagined what the program might be like. Little did she know, the next three summers would become some of the most transformative experiences of her life. HS² is a tuition-free, three-year summer program for first-generation and low-income high school students, offering immersive STEM-focused coursework, college counseling, and outdoor adventures like kayaking, rock climbing, and silversmithing.
Takira’s summers were filled not just with academic growth in subjects like pre-calculus and biomedical engineering, but also with personal growth. She learned collaboration, leadership, and resilience—whether navigating the challenges of hiking Aspen Mountain, camping in bear-populated woods, or being the first scholar from Mississippi to attend the program. Through these experiences, Takira discovered that, just like clay hardens in fire, people grow stronger when faced with challenges. She embraced the importance of legacy, service, and compassion, gaining a deeper sense of purpose and identity.
