Honoree Speaker Spotlight: Dr. Julius W. Garvey

ree

The Piney Woods School is honored to have Dr. Julius W. Garvey as a distinguished honoree speaker for this year’s Founders Weekend. Born on August 16, 1933, in Kingston, Jamaica, Dr. Garvey is the youngest son of Pan-Africanist leader Marcus Garvey and activist Amy Jacques Garvey. A graduate of McGill University, he pursued a career in medicine, specializing in thoracic and vascular surgery. Dr. Garvey has held significant medical positions, including Chief of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at Queens Hospital Center and Chief of Vascular Thoracic Surgery at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. He has also served as an attending surgeon at various hospitals in New York.

Beyond his medical career, Dr. Garvey is a dedicated advocate for his father's legacy. He has been instrumental in efforts to exonerate Marcus Garvey, culminating in a posthumous presidential pardon granted in January 2025. This achievement reflects Dr. Garvey's commitment to justice and his father's enduring impact on Black empowerment and Pan-Africanism.

Dr. Garvey's life embodies the spirit of braving uncharted territory—from pioneering in the medical field to leading a global movement for justice and recognition. His dedication to education, advocacy, and community service resonates with the mission of The Piney Woods School, which aims to empower students to navigate challenges and lead with purpose.

Join us in welcoming Dr. Julius W. Garvey as we honor his remarkable contributions and celebrate the legacy of courage, vision, and innovation that defines The Piney Woods School.
