For more than three decades, Lee A. Unger has embodied the true spirit of servant leadership — a life dedicated not only to fiscal excellence but also to the transformation of lives through mentorship, integrity, and compassion. His journey stands as a powerful testament to The Piney Woods School’s mission to educate the whole child — head, heart, and hands.
Mr. Unger’s career with The Piney Woods School began humbly as a Staff Accountant, yet his commitment, vision, and leadership quickly propelled him through the ranks. Over the course of 28 years, he served as Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and, in 2005, as Interim Administrator, guiding the institution with financial stewardship and steadfast devotion to its mission.
But his legacy extends far beyond balance sheets and budgets. To many students, Mr. Unger became a father figure and mentor, providing the wisdom, structure, and encouragement they needed to find their path. His leadership was as personal as it was professional — marked by compassion, accessibility, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every young person who crossed his path.
After his years at Piney Woods, Mr. Unger continued his journey of impact as Finance Director for the Voice of Calvary Ministries and Director of Administration for the City of Jackson, Mississippi. His leadership culminated in the founding of the LEAD Foundation Inc., an organization devoted to providing direct support to students in pursuit of higher education and personal growth.
Deeply engaged in his community, Mr. Unger serves on numerous nonprofit boards and currently holds the position of President of the Brookhollow Place Neighborhood Association. A proud graduate of Alcorn State University, he exemplifies how a life grounded in excellence, service, and faith can shape both institutions and individuals alike.
As The Piney Woods School celebrates its 2025 Founder’s Weekend, we proudly honor Lee A. Unger — a visionary leader whose legacy continues to uplift generations. His life’s work reflects the essence of Piney Woods’ core values: Love, Integrity, Faith, Excellence, and Empowerment.
Through his example, Mr. Unger reminds us that true leadership isn’t measured in titles or tenure — but in the lives changed, opportunities created, and futures made brighter because someone cared enough to lead with heart.
